Green Revolution of Amena on the sandy bank of Sumeswari river



Durgapur upazila of Netrakona district is situated on the foot of the Garo Hills of Meghalaya state of India. Bamonpara is a village of Kullagora union of Durgapur upazila where tribal people also live together. Amena Khatun is a member of Swarnalota women group of this village under STEP UP project of SUS. She lives in a straw-made house by fighting with poverty. She received training on vegetable gardening, chicken and duck rearing and cattle rearing. She acquired the courage to fight against poverty by hearing the discussion through participating in weekly group meeting regularly. She got 8 ducks, 3 chickens, 1 female heifer and 1 goat from the project.

At present, 37 chickens and ducks, 3 cows and 3 goats move around the house all the times like her family members. One cow gives 1.5 liters mild daily. She sells one-liter milk in an amount of 50 taka and she drinks half a liter along with her old husband. Later on, she started to cultivate vegetables on others’ uncultivated lands with the advice and assistance of Field Facilitator (FF) of the project. At the first time, she got 37000 take by cultivating tomato and potato from 48 decimal lands and she became encouraged more and more. Later on, she got the bumper return by cultivating watermelon in 256 decimal lands. She started to live in the cultivating area with her husband by making shed with polythene paper for security purpose. She became scared about hailstones to look at the sky. She completed marketing with the help of Technical Officer (Marketing), Field Facilitator (FF) and Unit Manager. She profited 92500 taka by discarding cultivation cost. She dreams of a CI sheet house where she will live more safely. The water comes through her both eyes when she thinks that she will be the owner of a house.
